2020 Recap : A Look Back, and A Vision Forward

2020 : A year of practiced patience, lessons learned, voices heard, truths challenged and the beginning of breakthroughs. This year has been a rollercoaster for everyone, and a year to turn worry into wonder, looking up at the stars (Oscar Wilde). Here’s a quick recap.

ANDERSON sits down and talks how collaborating with Pinterest as a Pinterest Creator has helped him to bridge the gap between the high fashion / beauty world and his roots of small-town America :

How has Pinterest helped you grow your audience/reach new audiences?

Hopping on board with Pinterest as a creator has allowed me to reach millions of young photographers and creatives. I grew up in the American Midwest and as a budding artist, I always had the most difficult time finding resources to inspire and grow my creative photography career. The fashion / beauty industry can really turn into its own ecosystem and after self-teaching and experiencing it myself, it feels refreshing to share content that will hopefully make a difference in young photographers’ careers!

Shimmering Sustainability

Exploring the sparkly side of sustainable beauty + fashion, biodegradable glitter BioGlitz teamed up with photographer ANDERSON and 1883 Magazine to show how expressing yourself sustainably can be just as chic, colourful and fashion-forward as ever.

“ … The Warhol of the 21st Century.”

Self portraits for Wonderland Magazine and an interview talking inspirations, staying creative and helping the next generation of creatives.

Your exploration of identity is fascinating – is there an ultimate goal you’d like to reach whilst you explore gender and identity through photographs?

I think that the most beautiful thing photographs can convey, or at least that I like to play with, is the intersection between fantasy and reality. The finer the line, the better. When we look at a photograph of another human being, at the very least we relate to the subject on a primal level. Questions like “who is this?; why is that expression on their face?; what are they thinking?” begin to race through the mind. As a photographer, these mental processes interest me very much! No matter how fantastical the photograph might be, I want the viewer to feel like the character I have fabricated is real. Perhaps they could exist in an alternate dimension with different cultural customs and laws of physics, or perhaps they could be your neighbour down the road. If my art makes you question your own perception through the life of someone that does not exist, I have succeeded. Dreams weave reality.

An Abstract Sense of Beauty

Theatrics were quintessential to iconic designer John Galliano’s world of whimsy. Drawing inspiration from the era of London’s Blitz Kids + NYC’s Studio 54, Galliano and his muses enter the 21st Century in a technicolour dream full of dramatics and captivating beauty in this exclusive editorial for TMRW Magazine.

Dark Decadence with Numéro

A stunning world of graphic makeup and line-work awaits in this exclusive piece for equally stunning magazine, Numéro Russia.

Podcasts + More

The COVID-19 pandemic sparked a revolution in the digital press and podcast space. Here are a few highlights with health / wellness publication Thrive, upcoming “Top 100” podcast Success By Design, and others. I am excited to see how this space continues to grow in the coming years!

Soid Studios

Iridescent shots for the Spring / Summer and Fall / Winter collections of New York-based street style label, Soid Studios, as well as a feature in Elle Mexico.

The Roaring ‘20s : Re-imagined

In desperation; for inspiration; in wonder … we cling to burning balls of gas hundreds of thousands of miles away to find our way across the sea, and for wisdom from twins, bulls and water-bearers. A night sky holds a certain sort of magic. Whether in the words of Oscar Wilde we are “looking at the stars” for hope, or if it is Toni Morrison on the depth and opportunity that New York City’s starless sky holds … each inspires a certain sense of wonder.

For its fourth issue, beautifully curated Milan-based, The Collector, and I teamed up to create the piece of the decade! This editorial refreshes a classic 1920s Gatsby style in a fresh, modern direction to hearken in the new decade.

Production Work

An exciting year with projects releasing including the Covergirl SS20 + FW20 Campaigns, Ole Heriksen, Esquire x Dylan Sprouse, Jack Dylan Grazer x Interview, Dixie D’Ameilo x V Magazine and more.

Thank you to everyone who made this absurd year special, new faces and old.

All my love,
Anderson
